Professional Development

The Professional Development Unit provides a comprehensive, focused, ongoing and in-depth system of professional development for early childhood teachers, teacher assistants, and administrators in order to advance knowledge, skills, and attitudes about learning and teaching young children.

A quality Professional Development program:

  • must be relevant and meaningful to the teachers, assistants, and the population they serve.
  • requires clear and focused long and short term goals.
  • is ongoing, connected to overall goals and built upon prior learning.
  • includes timely follow-up.
  • involves collaboration with peers, other stakeholders, and early childhood experts.
  • respects the uniqueness of individuals and their settings.
  • is based on theory and practice.
  • encourages ongoing reflection and dialogue.
  • encourages staff to be life long learners, thinkers, problem solvers and researchers.
  • provides exposure to internal and external ideas, information and opportunities.
  • includes administrative support, interest and involvement.
